Such a fun and unique book accessory! The dickle stole my heart

When I entered the world of Rome, Kentucky I found four siblings trying to find their way in the world. I loved their bond and how through great tragedy they still showed up for each other in the best way they could. Significant loss can greatly impact the function of a family and watching the Walker siblings move through their grief and figuring out who they are has hit very close to home. Well, I truly enjoyed each of the previous three books, the story of Madison and James may be one of my favorites of all times.

I have never related to a character the way I relate to Maddie. There is something empowering and beautiful when you feel seen, understood and watch the growth of someone whom you feel so connected to. Being the sibling who feels like the odd one out is a difficult place to live. You are often described as the runner or too impulsive. Characterized as the overly dramatic one. Highly emotional. Or in Maddie’s words, a chaos gremlin.

We find Maddie in NYC, recently graduating culinary school and wanting to return home. One mistaken phone call turns into a job opportunity she desperately needs to get her back to Rome. Once home, we watch her struggle with her own self-worth. Panic attacks in the one place that used to bring her joy. Battling people preconceived expectations of her. And a desire to find connection beyond the bedroom.

Enter James. Hot farmer and owner of the Huxley farm. The Huxleys have been a permanent fixture in the Walker siblings' lives forever. The Huxley and Walker parents were best friends. James and Noah (Madison’s brother) are best friends. Maddie and James are often sparring partners with hilarious banter and quick comebacks. And most importantly, James has been in love with Maddie for almost a decade. So what does a man in love with a newly minted chef do, build a restaurant on the family farm of course.

Maddie settles into her life back in Rome in her newly built chef cottage on the Huxley farm property. This forced proximity and a newly formed best friendship between our main characters leads to a slow burn romance that keeps you on your toes. I loved the growth of their friendship and how James truly knows and respects Maddie. On the flip side, Maddie begins to see James for all of his strengths but also wants to be the person to support him when he is feeling weak.

Sarah Adams does a brilliant job keeping the family connected to their story but also allowing these two to find their way independent of everyone else. The dynamics between the Walker siblings is always hilarious but it was great to see them finally accept Maddie for who she is and not all her failures, as she calls them.

The ending did me in. The scene with Madison and Mrs. Huxley brought on the ugly tears. Finding out how you connect to your family and knowing you are not the odd man out is life changing. That moment changed Maddie's life. Now I just wish there was more time with this crew. I will re-read and recommend this book to everyone.

Absolutely an amazing book! I've read it twice and listen to it on audio. But I couldn't find the last copy of the Alliance series and finially found it here! I prefer to build my library from local areas not online.
